Among Both Saints and Sinners

by Julie Kish
Barry Harmon has been called to serve in two worlds. The pastor and the jailer. As he leaves the Boyle County Detention Center parking lot, jailer Barry Harmon waves at someone in a passing car. Harmon seems to have friends everywhere he goes.
Harmon stops for a home-cooked lunch at the diner inside Leonard's Marathon station in Perryville, which he occasionally visits. "They feed you good here," he said.
Barry Harmon and his wife, Patsy, share a late breakfast Saturday morning at the H&A Diner. They were married 37 years ago, when he was 16 and she was 17. "This is 90 percent of my ministry right here," he said. "Without her, I couldn't be in it."
Barry Harmon, pastor of New Harmony Baptist Church and the Boyle County jailer, shares memories with old friend Paul Readnour, a retired pastor, at a pastor appreciation breakfast at Shoney's. Harmon and Readnour, who went to Bible college together in Pineville, laughed about a memorable fishing trip from their college days. While enjoying fresh-picked berries, the two managed to reel in more than fish -- "Hornets' nests, blackberries and Fruit of the Looms," Harmon recalled.
Off in their own worlds, sisters Brooke, 6, and Emily Blandford, 7, left, and siblings Luke, 4, and Hailey Chesser, 2, talk to each other while sitting near the pulpit during the children's message at New Harmony Baptist Church.
New Harmony Baptist Church pastor Barry Harmon says goodbye to church member Rebecca Kaenzig after services. With only about 80 who come to church regularly, Harmon takes time to talk to everyone. "They're small in number, but they've got big hearts," said his wife, Patsy Harmon.
