It takes more courage for a boy to play at Red Boiling Springs than anywhere else,” said Clay Dixon, coach of the Red Boiling Springs High School football team.
The Bulldogs were on a losing streak that could be the longest in the state. Their record since August, 1986 was 0-54.
The school is small, and the team has 25 players. There are so few players that when someone gets a position, it’s for the season.
Dixon said he inherited a monster when he took the job two years ago.
“I want to turn Red Boiling Springs around. I want to turn them from losers to winners. I honestly believe they’re afraid to win, because if they win one time, they have to work again.”
On Oct. 4, the Bulldogs took on Nashville Christian School, whose record was 0-24.
Larry Gragg, offensive tackle, said he wanted to win “just to see what it feels like.”
Dixon vowed to get a crew cut if the team ever won.
After the game, Gragg still didn’t know what it felt like to win, and Dixon didn’t have to get his head shorn.
Nashville Christian broke its losing streak with a 28-6 win.
“My mission is not accomplished,” Dixon said.
