Balancing bench and family

by Gary Emord-Netzley
On the weekend the Choate family spends time relaxing and dealing with headaches.
Because his wife Robin works nights, Jeff Choate rises at 6:00 a.m. to get himself and their oldest boy Matthew, 7, ready for school. But first Choate must change a diaper on the couple’s 16-month-old son Tyler.
During his usual limited leisure time Judge Choate enjoys dove hunting.
At home together during the week for only a few minutes, Judge Choate and his wife, Robin, share a laugh as Tyler does his own thing.
As the county attorney and Judge Choate discuss his case with the public defender, an indifferent juvenile offender waits to hear the outcome.
Not satisfied with the food on his tray, Tyler grunts and points to his father’s plate which draws a kindly, but negative response.
