Lee Elliott, a Casey County resident of 95 years, has lived in Liberty for 45.
“Liberty is one of the best little towns that I know of,” Elliott said. “I can’t think of a place that I’d enjoy more than Liberty People have a high sense of morality”
After his junior year at Western Kentucky University he was drafted into the Navy. During his two-year tour in World War I, he served on board the U.S.S. New Hampshire, “a first-class battleship,” he said. Fortunately, he was stationed in the Atlantic where he didn’t see much action.
After the war, he decided to be a teacher and taught all elementary-level classes in both Willow Springs and Liberty.
Ten years later, Elliott felt he was entitled to the Poor Pension Plan, so he decided to apply for a civil service job. He did and received a job with the postal service. Elliott started delivering by horseback and 36 years later, at age 69, he retired.
Florence Pittman, 84, a friend for several years has been seeing Elliot for some time now .
“How long we ‘been seein’ each other?” Elliott asked.
“Too long,” Pittman said with a laugh. “We’ve been seein’ each other, just kind of dating along for 15 years.”
The two enjoy each other’s company
Elliott’s son, Humphrey, a Casey County school principal, helps in shaving and dressing his father. The two, who now live together, have grown very close to each other.
At age 95, Elliot said, “as long as a fell ow can go on and do anything he wants to, go anywhere he wants to; why, life’s worth the while.”
