It takes about two years for things to filter down to Scottsville, the rural community 25 miles east of Bowling Green, said Chamber of Commerce President, Janice Patton.
“We are a rural environment here,” she said. “But I wouldn’t want to say Allen County is out of step.”
The city is one of those places where life is more laid back,” Patton said. “People are not as concerned about fashion as others.”
Scottsville has a population of about 4,440, about a third of Allen County’s population of 14,623. The county covers 338 square miles.
“It’s a very pleasant and good place to live, work, and retire,” Mayor George Maxwell said. “I’ve been here for 40 years and never thought of leaving.”
Maxwell said the area is growing modestly. “We don’t want to be much larger,” he said. “We still enjoy the advantages of living in a rural community.”
Patton, who is the wife of Allen County News Editor Mike Patton, dsif the area is diversely populated—an equal share of elderly and youthful people.
“It’s one of the most charming places I’ve ever lived,” She said. People are warm and friendly. They take you in and put you to work.”
The Dollar General Store warehouse and headquarters, nerve center for the largest national discount chain, employs about 500 workers from the Scottsville area.
“Dollar General is an integral part of life around here,” said Patton. “If you take something like that out of our community, there is a large hole left to fill.”
She said the Dollar General Corporation provides jobs for people just out of high school and an opportunity to go into lower levels of management.
“Everybody shops at the Dollar General Store,” she said. “Doctors’ wives, dentists’ wives, and sharecroppers’ wives shop there.”
Along with the thriving business industry, Maxwell said Scottsville is “a real friendly neighborhood.”
“Scottsville has excellent recreational facilities, and is close enough to a big city,” he said. “But we still enjoy the advantages of living in a rural community.”
Patton said the area is an ideal place to raise children. “I don’t worry about sending my child up the corner to get a Slushy,” she said. “She can chat with the manager, and have ice cream. It’s a warm, friendly environment.”
She said she would hate to think about leaving Scottsville. “I’ve lived in a number but of places, but this is the first place where I set out the apple trees.”
