With a baby on board

by Kim Swift
Jan, Jim and Carrie Bloink stand by their office sign. The Bloinks are both practicing chiropractors on Scottsville Road in Scottsville. This is the second year they office has been open and for the past year Carrie has been a permanent office partner.

To Jim and Jan Bloink, some things are more important than money. That’s why the two doctors have established chiropractic business in Scottsville.

“It’s also a good environment to raise children,” Jan said.

Having 11-month-old Carrie in the office during their 8-hour work day is important to them.

As Jim helped Carrie crawl across the floor, he said, “It’s the little things you miss; that’s why I like having her around.” Otherwise, “Mommy gets to see these things, but Daddy sees her when she’s grumpy.”

Jan said she wouldn’t work if Carrie weren’t in the office. Carrie’s rosy cheeks and round-faced smiles brighten more faces than just her parents’ She is good therapy for patients, especially elderly people, Jan said. Bending down to Carrie’s level, and picking her up are good exercise.

When patients come into the renovated Victorian cottage, they look for Carrie first. Usually, she’s in the center of the floor, entertaining patients.

Living in Lafayette, Tenn., with their Labrador retriever Ginger, the Bloinks like to get away from the city during weekend camping trips to Dale Hollow Lake. Jim said he likes their small house in Lafayette because when he’s in his backyard, he can forget he’s in a town.

“I have friends in cities who tell me how much money they make,” he said smiling, “but I say ‘Yeah, but you don’t have the fresh air and the aesthetics of the country’.”
