Home grown

Karen Copas, 19, take a food order at the Sonic Drive-In restaurant in Scottsville, Ky. Copas has lived in Scottsville her entire life and has no plans to leave. “I won’t live anywhere else because this town is so closely knit,” Copas said. “Everybody knows everybody.” She has been working as a car hop at the Sonic Drive-In ever since she graduated high school in 1984 and works 35 to 47 hours a week.

Karen Copas seems to be a typical teenager. She could have been raised anywhere in the United States, but has lived in Scottsville all of her nineteen years.

She graduated from Allen County-Scottsville High School in 1984 and has been working as a car hop at the Sonic Drive-In since then. Although she quit working twice, Copas enjoys working very much.

She prefers cooking over car hopping, but serving customers has its advantages like “meeting guys out there (in the parking lot) and stuff.”

Car hopping has its disadvantages as well, like the time Karen slipped in the snow and a tray of food landed on top of her.

“I didn’t get hurt, but boy was I embarrassed. The only thing I remember was hearing everybody laughing – employees as well as customers.”

Copas works 35 to 47 hours a week. “I can’t see myself working anyplace else,” she said.

“Someday I would like to manage one, of course there would be some changes. Such as some new paneling and some curtains to liven up the place.”

Another part of Karen’s life is her boyfriend, Eric Calvert. Karen and Eric, 21, have been dating for 11 months. Her dreams are to get married and settle down in Scottsville – “my favorite place in the world.”

“I won’t live anywhere else because this town is so closely knit,” she said. “Everybody knows everybody.”

Sometime work isn’t all business. Karen Copas, 19, always finds time for a smile and a laugh no matter how busy it gets at the restaurant.
