Family fixins’

by Lynn Saunders
Michelle Harper, 15 Alex harper, 11, are half-owners of the Cave Ridge Olde Country Store.

When Metcalfe County students get out of school for the day some of them stop by the Cave Ridge Olde Country Store for a soda.  But two of them are already on the other side
of the counter.

Fifteen-year-old Michelle Harper and her Il-year-old brother Alex are half-owners of the store and restaurant with their parents, Roger and Josephine.

“We have people stop in here that don’t want anybody else to cook for them but him,” Harper said of his son. “And if we have any bad checks come back, I turn them over to him.”

The family built the store located on U.S. 68-80 three years ago after Roger decided he was “not gonna make any money workin’ for someone else.”

Michelle and Alex wait on tables, flip burgers and mop floors enthusiastically

“We get to meet a lot of people from different places everywhere,” Michelle said. “And besides, there’s nothin’ else to do.

“But the bad part is that sometimes it cuts me out of doing things,” she added, “like skating or going to the dances on Friday nights.” Still, Michelle said, “friends from school say I’mlucky ”

“When they get out of high school,” he said, “this is gonna all be theirs.”
