Paul Jessie

by Robert Pope
Paul Jessie, from Metcalfe County, Ky. grew up on his family farm.

Paul Jessie, like a lot of Metcalfe Countians, has lived his entire life on his family farm. He lives in a one-room, wood-frame house cluttered with his belongings.

The house, which has no electricity is heated with a stove. His home is a farm where he has lived a home he loves. He said he’s been “offered money a lot of it,” for the farm, but he wouldn’t take a million dollars because “it’s my home.”

Jessie is a farmer who can’t farm anymore. Surgery three years ago ended his ability to work the land. Now he spends his time walking into town to see friends and then walks back home.
