Susan Williamson

by Georgia Nell Dukes
Susan Williamson, 38, editor of The Edmonton Herald-News in 1985.

In a town where the natural order of things is greatly respected, a quiet woman is stirring action with her new ideas.

Susan Williamson, 38, would like to change her adopted home in some ways. The Pittsburgh native wants 1o make life easier for Edmonton residents by making plans for the future.

In her job as editor of the towns newspaper she has tried to ease these new ideas gently into the community Editorials are new to the Edmonton Herald.

At times she smoothes ruffled feathers by explaining one community group to another. She sometimes supports unpopular ideas, like zoning laws, that the town resists because they’ve never needed them before.

But most importantly as a mother of two and as a citizen, she would like to see Edmonton’s educational system improved.

“It’s the children of the community that the town depends on,” she said, “to keep the personality of its past and to survive into the future.”
