Country vet

by Doreen Dennis
Veterinarian Dr. Fred Evansnin Metcalfe County, Ky. in 1985.

They know who he is when he comes around the barn. He’s the local veterinarian who calls the animals by name: Misty Jack and Boots.

A lot of farm animals in Metcalfe, Cumberland and Monroe
counties know him, too. Dr Fred Evans isn’t an average veterin-
arian. He’s a caring vet who gives the animals love and medicine
they need.

“If I didn’t love my work, I wouldn’t be in the business,” he said.

“I’ve been in the business eight years because I like to do it.”
He said he wouldn’t want to practice anywhere else. “This is a
country practice. If you charged like they do in the city you
wouldn’t have any business at all.”

On a Sunday afternoon, Evans got a call to check on a sick
horse. When he arrived, he found Poco lying on the floor of a stall.

“I thought she was dead,” he said. “It scared me to death.”
After getting some medicine and calm reassurance from Dr
Evans, Poco was up again quickly.
