Cuttin’ and Talkin’

by Bob Skipper
Fred Lewis, barbershop on the square in Burkesville, Ky.

The barber shop is just that no fancy styling or permanents, just haircuts. That says a lot about Fred Lewis and about Burkesville as a whole.

Lewis is one of the more established citizens of Burkesville as his barber shop has occupied its place on the square for many years. More people seem to come in to talk than to get haircuts, although Lewis has more than his share of business. His is one of only two such establishments for men in the Cumberland County seat.

And like the town, Lewis is rather shy, especially when it comes to having his picture taken. He would rather talk, whether it’s with one of his customers or one of the regular crew that comes in in the mornings.
