A rare breed

by Andy Corn
Cord and Hattie Groce.

Cord and Hattie Groce had never met the photographer before he knocked on their back door.

Mr. Groce was wary of the camera until the photographer won his approval by helping him “rick” wood.

The Graces served meals in the kitchen, complete with a wood burning stove and a conventional stove. Water was pumped in from an exterior holding tank.

These people were self-sufficient, hardworking farmers. They lived much like our pioneer forefathers, providing for each other’s needs.

The Graces laughed little, but when they did, it was genuine.

Editor’s note:

Hatie Bow Groce was born August 15, 1897, and died January 30, 1982. Cord A. Groce was born February 22, 1897, and died December 22, 1982.

We were privileged to know them.
