Greg Jones knows first-hand that drug and alcohol addiction can ruin lives. He faced those demons years ago, and now it’s his mission to help others through the darkness.
“I’ve been there. I know,” said Jones, the senior pastor and former board member of River Outreach, which provides a faith-based community, housing and support services to those wanting to turn their lives around. “If God changed me, he can change anybody.”
Located on the east end of Maysville, in an an improving neighborhood that was on the decline, the River Outreach program began in 2018, a sanctuary for those suffering hardships with little hope of a sustainable lifestyle.
It wasn’t until Pastor Greg arrived to manage the program in 2021, after 19 years learning at a ministry in Lexington, that hope was found among those who passed through the doors.
“Things changed and the opportunity opened up (to become senior pastor) and Maysville just put arms around us,” he said.
As the face of the organization and as a pastor who preaches at several churches around Kentucky, his impact within the community is evident.
Stephanie Jones, his wife of 10 years, said: “Everybody in Maysville knows who you are, knows him: Oh yeah that’s Pastor Jones, it doesn’t matter where we are at.” The love he receives from God and his family, he then pushes onto those who he encounters.
Jones, 67, grew up in Maysville, and has touched the lives of many others through his generosity. He’s saved souls from the streets — and for the greater glory of God.
“I got caught up in drugs, alcohol, jail, when God saved me,” he said. “…All of my life has been preparing me for this.”
Toby Farrell, 42, of Cincinnati, moved to Maysville and joined the River Outreach Program 11 months ago. “If I didn’t find this place, I’d be in a place I didn’t want to be at,” he said. “I enjoy the community. River Outreach is faith-based and will help you get back on your feet. All you have to do is work the program. It will work for you if you work at it.”
