Sarah Culbreth has been in the pottery business for more than 40 years. She and her husband, Jeff Enge, have produced clay items including vases, bowls, mugs, luminaries and their famous spoon-bread bakers. They can create anything with their hands. As the years progressed, their son, David Enge, joined the team and has created his own unique style of work.
Although Tater Knob Pottery and Farm in Berea has multiple hands with a different spin on clay, Sarah is the woman who started it all 35 years ago.
Since her graduation from Berea College in December 1976, she has chaired the Fair Committee of the Kentucky Guild Fair, been a member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists &#038; Craftsmen, started a Christmas Parade and opened Tater Knob Pottery. 
Sarah has been an important figure in the pottery circuit, but since she turned 60, her body is starting to feel the change. “This is my house, my body, and I need to take care of me,” she says.
Sarah values her customers. Whenever a customer buys something, she remembers by writing his or her name in a book. She is always willing to throw pottery for her customers and still loves her craft. Her famous spoon-bread bakers pay the bills, but she also wants to throw and create pottery for herself.
Sarah finds her solitude in the early mornings around 6:30 a.m. with a cup of organic French-roast coffee and something to read.
&#8220;I see a vision where I would redo a building,&#8221; she says, &#8220;a house on the farm, electrified and covered, and a space I could just throw.&#8221;
