Coach Kenneth Lewis, the defense coach or the Owensboro High School football team, meets with Christon Woods regularly to provide Christon time to vent his frustrations.Football provides a realease for Christon Woods, who admits to his shortcomings. "People sometimes think I'm mad, maybe I am, but I'm mostly just thinking and I can't control (my emotions)," Christon says. "Everyone says I've done a 360," Christon says. "When I transferred to OHS, they said my records were a stack about a foot tall. Since my freshman year, Coach Lewis has been giving me advice and keeping me on track with my behavior in school, and I've improved a lot."Christon Woods retreats to his grandmother's house after school. He usually gets home at 7:30 p.m. after football practice, eats dinner, does homework and then talks to his grandmother, Katherine Robinson, before bed. "I tell my nanaw everything," Christon says. "You know you have best friends and stuff, but I don't tell them the stuff I tell her." Katherine Robinson, Christon Woods' grandmother, provides a pillar of support for the Owensboro High School senior, who moved in with his grandmother when he was 12 . "He takes care of me, " Robinson says. "It's kind of like I'm his child sometimes." Christon reminds her to take her medicines and makes sure she's eating. Christon Woods spends time with his younger brother Kamren Watkins, 11, who often visitis Christon and his grandmother on weekends. Christon Woods landed in Beacon Central Alternative School, but during his freshman year, he transfered to Owensboro High School and moved in with his grandmother, Katherine Robinson, in order to get a fresh start. Christon Woods gets distracted in class, but his grades have improved immensly since his freshman year.
