Quality Control

by Melissa Keeley
Mary and Bob Sennott own and manage the Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop, which has been doing business in Elizabethtown for the last 13 years. The shop offers many different products including a large array of fabrics, patterns and notions.

Four thousand bolts of fabric. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling sample projects, kits, needles, rulers, templates, cutting tools, books, magazines. This is a fabric junkie’s fantasy, a quilter’s dream come true. The quartermaster in charge of Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop in Elizabethtown is Mary Sennott. Bob Sennott, Mary’s husband of more than 40 years serves as her faithful adjutant in running the business they moved to the ground level of their Elizabethtown home 13 years ago. Mary is a living catalog of the projects completed by local quilters, but the abundantly stocked store draws shoppers from as far away as Illinois and Texas. What’s the appeal? Dedicated customers say Mary has a superb eye for selecting prints and colors, and are grateful that she continues to stock a broad selection of flannels, which many shops no longer do.

Bob and Mary opened the shop after each had retired. Mary worked as a kindergarten teacher for a decade after their children were grown. Bob bossed 16 men as a Quality Assurance supervisor for Caterpillar in Illinois. “But here,” he chuckled, “she’s in charge.” It was Mary’s dream to open the shop, but she’s quick to insist that she couldn’t manage without Bob. He keeps the books, and handles much of the custom stitching performed on the shop’s long-arm quilting machine. Uniquely Yours has no other regular staff. How does it feel to live and work with your spouse? “It’s easy when you have a spouse like mine,” Mary said. “We learned a long time ago that we work well together.”

Bob Sennott greets an early morning school bus while fetching the mail outside the Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop. The shop is in the Sennott's home, and the couple spends long hours managing the store.
Mary Sennott began the Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop in Elizabethtown 13 years ago with 300 bolts of fabric. Now the shop has grown to include 4,000 bolts of fabric as well as a wide variety of quilting supplies and notions.
Mary was a kindergarten teacher, and Bob worked for Catepillar for 30 years in quality assurance. When they retired, the couple opened the Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop to fulfill Mary's dream of owning a quilting store.
Mary oversees the day to day operation of the shop but relies heavily on the support and help of her husband, Bob. The couple has been married for more than 40 years.
The Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop is packed with a huge assortment of quilting necessities and a colorful mosaic of fabric, products and supplies.
During a beginning quilting class Mary instructs Marcia Tipton and Pam Hulsey about how to piece their sampler quilts together.
Mary shows her husband, Bob, exactly where she wants a baby quilt hung in the Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop. Although Bob previously worked as a supervisor at Catepillar he now takes direction from Mary on what needs to be done arond the shop.
Mary and Bob say the Uniquely Yours Quilt shop in the basement of their Elizabethtown home has become their whole lives.
