Sister Sister

by Megan Spelman
Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, left, follows Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, 83, as they stroll the property at Loretto Motherhouse, where they call home. Behind them is the Novitiate Building, a former Academy which now houses administrative offices and residents. "We're very close to one another" said Sister Theresa Louise about her relationship to fellow nun and sibling, Sister Bernardine.
Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, 83, left, holds a photograph taken in 1993, the year she and younger sibling, Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, right in photo, retired to the Loretto Motherhouse after years of teaching primary school.
Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, left, and Sister Theresa Louise Wisema, 83, spend hours in prayer each day living at the Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx in northern Marion County. The two nuns are also siblings born 18 months apart who now live together in retirement.
Sister Bernardine Wiseman's rosary beads cast a shadow on her leg during the "Holy Hour" she spends in chapel next to Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman. The two nuns try to spend an hour each afternoon in silent prayer and meditation.
"We've been friends a long time." Sister Rose Alma Schuler said, far left, with Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, 83, center, and Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, far right, as they "work" a puzzle in the Loretta Motherhouse where all three women spend their retirement from the Catholic Church.
Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, left, and Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, 83, pass free time playing card games on the Loretto Motherhouse computers. Although the sisters claim few things differentiate their personalities, Sister Theresa Louise plays freecell, and Sister Bernardine prefers solitaire.
Sister Bernardine Wiseman, left, and Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, right, coax "Diamond" to eat. The nuns volunteered to feed the cat while their friend and fellow nun traveled from the Motherhouse property.
Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman laughs as she and Sister Bernardine Wiseman feed the ducks on the Loretto Motherhouse property in Nerinx.
Sister Bernardine Wiseman, 82, center, folds the afghan she made in her free time as Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, 83, leaves Sister Bernardine's private room in the Loretto Motherhouse infirmary.
Sister Theresa Louise Wiseman, left, and younger sibling Sister Bernardine Wiseman "pay their respects" to nuns burried at the cemetery on the Loretto Motherhouse property. "My goal is to go to heaven," 83-year-old Sister Theresa Louise said, "I think we all want to be in heaven some day."
