“We really enjoy how all this literature, all this information surrounding us is just a huge treasure we get to share with people,” says Joe Wilkie, co-owner of Robie Books in Berea.
Robie Books was started 12 years ago by Berea local Harry Robie, who was interested in being a purveyor of fine and collectible books. In 2009, when Harry’s health declined, Avena Cash, one of his employees, bought the store from him. Now Avena is joined in administration by her longtime domestic partner, Joe Wilkie. They employ one store clerk, their close friend, Melanie Fay.
The store became a family business.
Although it is not the vendor of rare collectibles that Harry Robie envisioned, the store is a warm and inviting place and a source for used and new books that the community cherishes. Joe and Avena offer a wide inventory, from new best-sellers to special editions and local authors.
“You cannot assume who would be absolutely passionate about reading and learning,” says Avena. “It’s a beautiful thing.”
With the rise of internet shopping and an influx of big-box stores at the edge of town, however, the economy of Berea is changing. The college is responding to economic trends, too, by offering shorter contracts to its employees, which contributes to a greater turnover in the population. Amid the changing character of the area, Avena sees their bookstore as a “quiet rooted anchor . . . that enriches the community.”
Customers agree.
“Gosh, I could spend my life here!” exclaims Kajah Cunningham, a Berea College freshman, during a visit to the store.
Ultimately, Avena can’t imagine not having the bookstore.
“Being the steward of something, it’s like being the mom of a family. It wouldn’t occur to me not to keep going,” she says. “I just wouldn’t want to disappoint people.”
