Celina, Tennessee

Oct 18 - Oct 20, 1984 | Just a Quiet Little Town

On this lazy October weekend in 1984, the tourists that migrate to the nearby Dale Hollow Lake in the spring and summer have migrated to their own roosts. The boat docks are nearly empty, and the motels have turned off their "No Vacancy" signs. "There's a rhythm to the town," says 1984 Mayor Wayne Rich in his office near the town square. The roads are quiet now, he says, but in the summer, "I have seen just boat after boat go by." Celina is a tourist town without the traps for the thousands that cross the green steel bridge that spans the Cumberland and Obey rivers on their way to Dale Hollow.
